Tarot · Major Arcana II

The High Priestess (II) in tarot: meaning, upright and reversed

A calm figure sits between two pillars, one dark and one light, with a veil hung behind her patterned with pomegranates. She holds a half-hidden scroll, and a crescent moon rests at her feet. In the Marseille deck she sits with an open book in her lap. The High Priestess is the card of inner knowing: what you sense before you can explain it, and the quiet that lets you hear it.

In tradition

Tradition reads the High Priestess as intuition, mystery and patience: knowledge that comes from within rather than from outside. She is the keeper of what is not yet ready to be said. The scroll in her lap is often read as learning that is only partly revealed, and the two pillars as the meeting of opposites. As card II she follows the Magician, and where he acts, she waits and listens. She leads on to the Empress, where inner knowing begins to grow into the world. The Golden Dawn tradition links the card with the Moon, the light of reflection, rhythm and the unseen.

Reversed

Reversed, the High Priestess is read as inner knowing that is hard to hear. You might be listening so closely to other people's opinions that your own sense of things goes quiet. It can describe a secret kept too long, or a feeling you have set aside because it did not fit the plan. The reversed card does not take intuition away. It points to the noise around it, and to the wish for a little stillness.

How it is read

As a card of the day, the High Priestess often describes a quieter mood, a day for noticing rather than pushing. In a three-card spread, in the past position it can point to a hunch that turned out to matter; in the present, to something you already sense but have not said; in the future, to an answer that comes through reflection rather than effort. In a question about a relationship, it tends to describe depth, unspoken feelings, or a connection with something still veiled about it. It can also describe trusting your own sense of the other person rather than waiting for everything to be spelled out.

The High Priestess keeps her scroll half closed. She is the card of everything you know without being told, and of the patience to let it come into words.
