The Tower (XVI) in tarot: meaning, upright and reversed

A tall tower stands on a rocky peak, and a bolt of lightning strikes its top, lifting off the crown-shaped roof. Sparks scatter across a dark sky. The Marseille card shows the same sudden flash against a tower's top. The Tower is the card of sudden change: a shake-up that brings down what was not built to last, and lets fresh air in.

In tradition

Tradition reads the Tower as upheaval and revelation: the moment a structure that was not holding gives way. It can be a belief, a plan or an arrangement that looked solid but rested on a weak foundation. Many readers describe it as a card of truth breaking through, uncomfortable at first and freeing after. As card XVI it follows the Devil: what was held too tightly is shaken loose. It leads to the Star, and the two are a natural pair, the shake-up and the calm, hopeful space that opens after it. The Golden Dawn tradition links the card with Mars, the planet of energy and sudden action.

Reversed

Reversed, the Tower is read as change that happens more slowly or more quietly. It can describe a shake-up you sense coming and try to hold off, or a gradual letting go instead of a sudden one. Turned inward, it can point to a change of mind, an old belief giving way within you before anything shifts outside. The card describes the same release in a gentler form. Nothing has to fall all at once.

How it is read

As a card of the day, the Tower often describes a surprise: a plan that changes, news that shifts your view, a moment of sudden clarity. In a three-card spread, in the past position it can point to an upheaval that cleared the ground for what you have now; in the present, to a situation where something no longer holds; in the future, to a change that opens space for something more honest. In a question about a relationship, it tends to describe a sudden realisation or a frank conversation that changes the dynamic, an old pattern breaking so that a truer one can form.

The Tower is the card of the lightning flash. It shows what was not holding, and the open sky that appears once it is gone.
