Open data: Turkish coffee cup symbols

Version 0.1.0 · 29 October 2026

The 40 symbols of the coffee cup symbol dictionary as structured data, in Turkish and English. Free to use, including commercially, under CC BY 4.0: credit "Falyora (falyora.app)" and link back.

Download

  • symbols.json (40 records)
  • symbols.csv (same data, one row per symbol)
  • LICENSE (data: CC BY 4.0; build script: MIT)
  • CITATION.cff (how to cite)

What one record holds

  • id, name_tr, name_en, category: the symbol and its group (animals, shapes, objects, people, nature).
  • traditional_tr, traditional_en: what folk tradition says, in a few words.
  • falyora_reading_tr, falyora_reading_en: how Falyora reads it instead, without fear, dates or names.
  • zones: a short gist for each part of the cup: rim, side, bottom, handle, saucer.
  • url_tr, url_en: the full page for the symbol.

How it was made

Each record summarises one page of the dictionary. The pages are written with the help of AI tools and checked twice before publishing (editorial policy). The gists in the dataset are written for it, not cut from the pages: a validator checks that no run of eight or more words is copied, that every field stays short, and that no fear words appear.

The full page texts are not part of the dataset and are not under CC BY; only the gists are.

Ideas

  • A symbol picker or glossary for a tasseography project.
  • Teaching material on Turkish coffee culture.
  • Labels for research on shapes in coffee cup photos.
