Death (XIII) in tarot: meaning, upright and reversed

A rider in black armour sits on a white horse, carrying a dark banner marked with a white rose. Far behind, the sun rises between two towers. In the Marseille deck, where the card often has no name at all, a figure with a scythe clears a field where new shoots are already coming up. Death is the card of endings and change: a chapter closing so that the next one can begin.

In tradition

Tradition reads Death as transformation, transition and release: clearing away what has run its course to make room for what comes next. Many readers count it among the most hopeful cards in the deck, because every ending in it carries a beginning, and the sunrise in the background is often read this way. It is a card of seasons turning, of old roles and habits falling away, of the honesty to let something finish. As card XIII it follows the Hanged Man: after the pause comes real change. It leads to Temperance, where the new begins to blend and settle. The Golden Dawn tradition links the card with Scorpio, the sign of depth and renewal.

Reversed

Reversed, Death is read as change that is resisted, or slow to complete. You might be holding on to something that has already ended: a role, a habit, an old way of seeing yourself. It can describe being caught between the old chapter and the new one, not quite ready to turn the page. The reversed card points to the relief that often comes once you let an ending be an ending.

How it is read

As a card of the day, Death often describes a moment to clear something out: an old routine, a cluttered drawer, a plan that no longer fits. In a three-card spread, in the past position it can point to an ending that made space for the present; in the present, to a transition you are in the middle of; in the future, to a change that is already taking shape. In a question about a relationship, it tends to describe a bond entering a new phase, the close of one way of being together and the start of another. It can also describe letting go of an old pattern between two people.

Death is the card of turning the page. It shows the close of one chapter, the room that opens after it, and the light already rising behind it.
