Temperance (XIV) in tarot: meaning, upright and reversed
A winged figure stands with one foot on land and one in a pool, pouring water from one cup into another. A path leads away toward a soft light between distant mountains, and irises grow at the water's edge. The Marseille card shows the same figure pouring between two jugs. Temperance is the card of balance and blending: patience, moderation, and the slow art of finding the right mix.
In tradition
Tradition reads Temperance as harmony, moderation and patience: combining different things until they work together. The pouring between the cups is often read as a steady exchange, neither too much nor too little, and the feet in water and on land as the meeting of feeling and practicality. As card XIV it follows Death: after a chapter ends, things are brought back into balance. It describes the kind of change that happens gradually, through many small adjustments. It leads to the Devil, where that balance is tested by attachment. The Golden Dawn tradition links the card with Sagittarius, the sign of journeys and of searching for meaning.
Reversed
Reversed, Temperance is read as balance that has tipped. It can describe too much in one direction: too much work, too little rest, or swinging between extremes. It can also point to impatience, wanting results before the mix is ready, or to two parts of your life that refuse to blend. Often it is a sign to slow down rather than to try harder. The reversed card describes the wish to find the middle again.
How it is read
As a card of the day, Temperance often describes a calm, steady day, a moment to take things at an even pace. In a three-card spread, in the past position it can point to a time of patience that paid off; in the present, to a situation that needs compromise or a gentle hand; in the future, to things settling into a better balance. In a question about a relationship, it tends to describe two people adjusting to each other, give and take, and a bond built on patience. It can also show a connection that feels easy because neither side is pushing too hard.
Temperance is the card of the steady pour. It does not rush the mix. It shows how different things can come together when they are given time.
