The Fool (0) in tarot: meaning, upright and reversed

A young traveller walks toward the edge of a cliff, eyes on the sky, a small bundle over one shoulder and a white dog at their heels. In the Marseille deck the Fool is a wanderer with a stick, a small animal tugging at one leg. The Fool is the card of beginnings: the step you take before you know where the path goes, with more trust than plan.

In tradition

Tradition reads the Fool as a fresh start, spontaneity and openness: the willingness to set out without a map. It is often called the card of innocence, not in the sense of being naive, but of meeting the world without old fears. The Fool carries the number zero, so it sits both before the sequence and outside it. Many readers see the whole Major Arcana as the Fool's journey, a walk through each of the other cards in turn, starting with the Magician and arriving at the World. The Golden Dawn tradition links the card with the element of air, which suits its lightness and its freedom of movement.

Reversed

Reversed, the Fool is read as the same openness out of balance. Sometimes it is a leap taken without looking, enthusiasm running ahead of good sense. Just as often it is the opposite: a beginning you keep putting off, the bag packed but left by the door. The reversed card can also describe holding back out of worry about looking foolish. It points to the gap between wanting something new and feeling ready for it.

How it is read

As a card of the day, the Fool often describes a mood of curiosity, a good moment for trying something you have not tried before. In a three-card spread, in the past position it can point to a beginning that set the current story in motion; in the present, to a moment of stepping into the unknown; in the future position, to an opening that is still forming. In a question about a relationship, the Fool tends to describe lightness and play, a connection that is new or that feels new again, or a wish to keep things free rather than defined.

The Fool stands at zero, before anything has been counted. It is the card of the first step, and of the quiet trust it takes to make it.
