The World (XXI) in tarot: meaning, upright and reversed
A figure dances inside a large oval wreath, a wand in each hand and a sash floating around the body. In the four corners are a winged head, an eagle, a lion and a bull, the same four creatures seen on the Wheel of Fortune. The Marseille card keeps the same design. The World is the card of completion: a cycle fulfilled, a sense of wholeness, and the moment when everything comes together.
In tradition
Tradition reads the World as completion, achievement and integration: reaching the end of a long road and seeing how all its parts fit. It is a card of wholeness and celebration, and often of wider horizons, travel or a bigger world opening up. As card XXI it is the last of the Major Arcana, following Judgement and closing the sequence. It also turns back to the Fool: the end of one journey is the start of the next, which is why the two are often read together. The Golden Dawn tradition links the card with Saturn, the planet of time, structure and things brought to a good end.
Reversed
Reversed, the World is read as completion that is close but not quite reached. A project may need one last step, or a chapter may feel unfinished. It can also describe looking for closure that has not come yet, or hesitating at the edge of the next stage. The reversed card points to what is still needed to round things off.
How it is read
As a card of the day, the World often describes a satisfying day, a moment to finish something or enjoy what you have achieved. In a three-card spread, in the past position it can point to a cycle you completed that still supports you; in the present, to a sense of things coming together; in the future, to fulfilment and a wider view. In a question about a relationship, it tends to describe harmony and a sense of being complete together, a bond that feels whole and at ease. It can also mark the end of one stage of a relationship and the start of a fuller one.
The World is the card of the circle closed. It shows the whole of the road at once, and the place where it quietly begins again.
