The Hierophant (V) in tarot: meaning, upright and reversed

A robed figure in a tall crown sits between two pillars, one hand raised, the other holding a long staff. Two figures kneel before him, and a pair of crossed keys lies at his feet. The Marseille card shows much the same scene. The Hierophant is the card of tradition and teaching: the knowledge that is handed down, and the people and institutions who carry it.

In tradition

Tradition reads the Hierophant as learning, guidance and shared values: the teacher, the mentor, the school, the customs a community lives by. It is the card of belonging to something larger than yourself, and of following a path that others have walked before. The keys at the figure's feet are often read as knowledge passed from one generation to the next. As card V it follows the Emperor, turning personal authority into a shared tradition, and it leads to the Lovers, where a personal choice begins to matter. The Golden Dawn tradition links the card with Taurus, a sign of steadiness and lasting things.

Reversed

Reversed, the Hierophant is read as tradition questioned. You might feel boxed in by rules that no longer fit, or drawn to find your own way rather than the expected one. It can also describe advice that does not suit you, or a teacher you have outgrown. Turned the other way, it can point to following a routine rigidly because it feels safe. The reversed card is about finding which customs still serve you.

How it is read

As a card of the day, the Hierophant often describes a moment for learning: a class, a conversation with someone experienced, a habit worth keeping. In a three-card spread, in the past position it can point to the values you grew up with or a mentor who shaped you; in the present, to a group, a course or a set of rules you are part of; in the future, to a commitment made in a more formal way. In a question about a relationship, it tends to describe shared values, a traditional approach, or a bond that is made official in some way. It can also show the influence of family expectations on two people.

The Hierophant is the card of what is passed down. It shows the old paths, and leaves you to decide which of them lead where you want to go.
