The Lovers (VI) in tarot: meaning, upright and reversed
Two figures stand in a garden beneath a large winged figure and a bright sun. Behind one is a tree heavy with fruit, behind the other a tree of flames, and a mountain rises between them. In the Marseille deck a young person stands between two others, as if choosing, while a small winged archer takes aim from above. The Lovers is the card of connection and choice: what you are drawn to, and what you decide to stand by.
In tradition
Tradition reads the Lovers as love, harmony and union, and just as much as choice: the decision that follows from your values. Older guides lean on the choosing figure of the Marseille card, so the card is as much about a crossroads as about romance. It describes alignment, the moment when what you want and who you are point the same way. As card VI it follows the Hierophant, moving from shared rules to a personal decision. It leads on to the Chariot, where the choice is put into motion. The Golden Dawn tradition links the card with Gemini, the sign of pairs and of dialogue.
Reversed
Reversed, the Lovers is read as connection or choice out of alignment. It can describe a decision you keep putting off, or a choice made with only half your heart. Between two people it can point to values that do not quite meet, or to talking past each other. Turned inward, it can describe being torn between what you want and what you think you should want. The card points to the wish to find harmony again.
How it is read
As a card of the day, the Lovers often describes a moment of choosing: something where you need to decide what matters most to you. In a three-card spread, in the past position it can point to a meaningful bond or a choice that shaped where you are; in the present, to a decision about direction, or a connection that feels important; in the future, to a choice that becomes clearer with time. In a question about a relationship, it tends to describe closeness, attraction and mutual understanding, a bond in which two people meet as equals. It speaks to the quality of the connection rather than to how things turn out.

The Lovers is the card of what you say yes to. It shows the pull between two people and the choice within yourself, and how often those turn out to be the same thing.
