Judgement (XX) in tarot: meaning, upright and reversed

A winged figure in the clouds blows a trumpet hung with a banner, and below, people raise their arms toward the sound, as if waking. Mountains stand in the distance, under a wide sky. The Marseille card shows much the same scene. Judgement is the card of awakening: a call to rise, take stock, and step into a new stage of your life.

In tradition

Tradition reads Judgement as renewal, reflection and a calling: the moment you hear what your life is asking of you, and answer it. It is a card of honest review, of making peace with the past, and of a fresh start built on what you have learned. Unlike Justice, it is less about weighing others and more about waking up to yourself. Its trumpet is often read as a message you cannot ignore once you have heard it. As card XX it follows the Sun, turning clarity into purpose, and it leads to the World, where the journey comes to completion. The Golden Dawn tradition links the card with the element of fire, the spark that wakes things up.

Reversed

Reversed, Judgement is read as a call that is hard to hear, or hard to answer. You might be doubting yourself, or judging yourself so strictly that it is difficult to move on. It can also describe putting off a decision you already know is waiting. The reversed card points to the wish to listen to yourself more kindly, and to trust what you hear.

How it is read

As a card of the day, Judgement often describes a moment to take stock: to look back honestly and decide what comes next. In a three-card spread, in the past position it can point to a wake-up call that changed your direction; in the present, to a decision that feels important; in the future, to a new stage opening as you answer that call. In a question about a relationship, it tends to describe a second look at the bond: reflection, forgiveness, or a fresh start on clearer ground. It speaks to how you see the connection now, rather than to what the other person does.

Judgement is the card of the trumpet's call. It shows the moment you recognise what is asking for you, and choose to rise to it.
