The Chariot (VII) in tarot: meaning, upright and reversed

A figure in armour stands in a chariot under a canopy of stars, a walled city behind. Two sphinxes, one black and one white, rest in front of the chariot, and the driver holds no reins. In the Marseille deck two horses seem to pull in different directions. The Chariot is the card of drive and direction: holding a course, and moving forward by willpower rather than force.

In tradition

Tradition reads the Chariot as determination, momentum and self-control: the ability to bring opposing forces together and steer them one way. The two sphinxes or horses are often read as conflicting impulses, and the driver's calm as the discipline that keeps them on course. It is also a card of travel, and of success that comes from effort. As card VII it follows the Lovers: once the choice is made, the journey begins. It leads to Strength, where outward control becomes inner steadiness. The Golden Dawn tradition links the card with Cancer, whose protective shell suits the armoured driver.

Reversed

Reversed, the Chariot is read as drive that has lost its direction. You might feel pulled two ways at once, or find yourself pushing hard without moving. It can describe a plan that stalls, or energy spent on keeping control rather than on going forward. Turned inward, it can point to the need to decide where you actually want to go before you speed up. The theme is momentum, waiting for a clearer course.

How it is read

As a card of the day, the Chariot often describes a focused day, a moment to commit and push forward. In a three-card spread, in the past position it can point to an effort or a move that brought you here; in the present, to a goal you are steering toward; in the future, to progress that comes from staying on course. In a question about a relationship, it tends to describe two people with strong wills learning to move in the same direction, or a connection that has real momentum. Beside quieter cards, it can also ask whether one person is doing all the steering.

The Chariot is the card of a chosen direction. It does not say the road is smooth. It shows the steadiness it takes to hold the course.
