Strength (VIII) in tarot: meaning, upright and reversed

A figure in white, crowned with flowers, gently closes the jaws of a lion. Above her head floats the sign of infinity. In the Marseille deck, where the card is numbered XI, she holds the lion's mouth with the same calm. Strength is the card of quiet courage: patience, kindness, and the steady inner force that does not need to shout.

In tradition

Tradition reads Strength as courage, compassion and self-mastery: taming what is wild through gentleness rather than force. The lion is often read as raw feeling or instinct, and the figure as the calm that guides it without breaking it. As card VIII in the Rider-Waite-Smith deck, it follows the Chariot: outward control turns into inner steadiness. It leads on to the Hermit, where that strength turns toward reflection. It also sits close to Justice, the card it swaps places with between the two great decks. The Golden Dawn tradition, from which this numbering comes, links Strength with Leo, the sign of the lion and of warm-hearted confidence.

Reversed

Reversed, Strength is read as courage that has gone quiet. You might doubt yourself more than usual, or feel that your feelings are steering you rather than the other way round. It can describe impatience, or a habit of being hard on yourself when gentleness would help more. The reversed card does not take strength away. It points to the wish to find it again, often in a softer form. Small acts of patience are often where it returns.

How it is read

As a card of the day, Strength often describes a moment where patience works better than pressure. In a three-card spread, in the past position it can point to a difficult time you came through with grace; in the present, to a situation that asks for calm confidence; in the future, to inner resources that grow as you use them. In a question about a relationship, it tends to describe warmth, loyalty and patience: two people who meet each other's moods with understanding. It can also show a bond that grows stronger through kindness rather than through winning arguments.

Strength is the card of the gentle hand on the lion. It shows a kind of courage that is easy to miss, because it makes no noise at all.
