The Hermit (IX) in tarot: meaning, upright and reversed

An old figure in a grey cloak stands alone on a snowy peak, leaning on a staff and holding up a lantern with a six-pointed star inside. In the Marseille deck the Hermit walks with the lantern half hidden under his cloak. The Hermit is the card of solitude and reflection: stepping back from the noise to find your own light. Below, the world goes on, small and far away.

In tradition

Tradition reads the Hermit as introspection, wisdom and the search for truth: the time spent alone that makes things clearer. He is the guide who has walked the path and holds the lantern up for those who come after. The card often points to study, inner work, or a deliberate step away from the crowd. As card IX it follows Strength, turning that inner steadiness toward reflection, and it leads to the Wheel of Fortune, where the quiet of the mountain meets the turning of the world. The Golden Dawn tradition links the Hermit with Virgo, the sign of care, attention and discernment.

Reversed

Reversed, the Hermit is read as solitude out of balance. Sometimes it is too much: withdrawing so far that you lose touch with the people around you. Sometimes it is too little: being so busy that there is no space left to think. It can also describe resisting good advice, or a reluctance to look inward. The card points to the need to find the right amount of quiet for you.

How it is read

As a card of the day, the Hermit often describes a quieter day, a moment to think, read, walk or simply be on your own. In a three-card spread, in the past position it can point to a period of reflection that shaped you; in the present, to a need for space before deciding; in the future, to an answer found through patience. In a question about a relationship, it tends to describe distance or a need for personal space, one or both people turning inward for a while. It can also describe a connection that values depth over noise, or a wise friend whose view helps.

The Hermit carries a light that shows only the next step. It is the card of the clarity that comes from slowing down and looking for yourself.
