Wheel of Fortune (X) in tarot: meaning, upright and reversed

A great wheel turns in the sky, marked with letters and symbols, a sphinx seated on top and other creatures rising and sinking at its sides. In the four corners sit winged creatures, each with an open book. In the Marseille deck small animal figures cling to the turning rim. The Wheel of Fortune is the card of cycles: change, timing, and the way life keeps moving.

In tradition

Tradition reads the Wheel of Fortune as fate, turning points and the natural ups and downs of life. What rises comes down, what is low comes up, and the wheel itself never stops. It is often read as a lucky card, a fortunate change or the sense that things are moving again, but its deeper meaning is the cycle itself. As card X it follows the Hermit: after reflection, life turns once more. It leads on to Justice, where chance gives way to cause and effect. The Golden Dawn tradition links the card with Jupiter, the planet of growth and good fortune.

Reversed

Reversed, the Wheel of Fortune is read as a cycle that feels stuck or resisted. Things might seem to keep repeating, or a change you were hoping for is slow to arrive. It can also describe holding on to the way things were when the wheel has already moved. The reversed card is not bad luck. It points to the turning, and to how you meet it.

How it is read

As a card of the day, the Wheel of Fortune often describes a day with movement in it: a change of plans, an unexpected opening, things shifting into place. In a three-card spread, in the past position it can point to a turning point that changed the story; in the present, to a situation in motion; in the future, to a new phase taking shape. In a question about a relationship, it tends to describe a bond entering a new stage, or the rise and fall of feelings over time. It can also describe meeting someone at what feels like the right moment, without saying what follows.

The Wheel of Fortune is the card of the turning world. It does not choose where you land. It reminds you that nothing stays at the top or the bottom for long.
