Justice (XI) in tarot: meaning, upright and reversed

A crowned figure sits between two pillars, holding a double-edged sword upright in one hand and a set of scales in the other. In the Marseille deck the card is numbered VIII, but the figure is the same: calm, balanced, and looking straight at you. Justice is the card of fairness: truth, cause and effect, and decisions made with a clear head.

In tradition

Tradition reads Justice as balance, honesty and accountability: what you put into the world comes back in kind. The scales weigh, and the sword cuts through to the truth. It is a card of clear thinking and fair dealing, of taking responsibility for your own choices and seeing other people's with an even eye. As card XI in the Rider-Waite-Smith deck it follows the Wheel of Fortune: after chance comes consequence. It leads to the Hanged Man, where weighing things gives way to a new point of view. It is often read beside Strength, the card it trades places with in the Marseille order. The Golden Dawn tradition links Justice with Libra, the sign of the scales.

Reversed

Reversed, Justice is read as balance that has slipped. It can describe a situation that feels unfair, or a decision made with only half the facts. Turned inward, it can point to avoiding responsibility, or to being harder on yourself than the situation calls for. It can also describe not quite being honest with yourself about something. The theme is fairness, asking to be restored.

How it is read

As a card of the day, Justice often describes a moment for honest choices: weighing things up, keeping your word, saying what is true. In a three-card spread, in the past position it can point to a decision whose effects you are still living with; in the present, to a choice that needs fairness and clarity; in the future, to things settling into balance. In a question about a relationship, it tends to describe equality and mutual respect, a bond where both people give and take evenly. It can also show a conversation that clears the air, or the need to look honestly at what each person brings.

Justice is the card of the even scale. It does not take sides. It shows where things balance, and where they are still looking for their level.
