The Mountain (21) in Lenormand: meaning and combinations

A large mountain, grey and steep, filling most of the card. The Mountain is the card of obstacles: delays, difficulties, things that stand in the way and do not move just because you want them to. It also describes effort, the climb itself, and the patience a hard stretch asks of you. It is heavy but not hostile. Mountains are simply there.

In tradition

Tradition reads the Mountain as obstacles, delays and hard challenges, and sometimes as an opponent or an opposing force. Older guides call it a card of patience and endurance, and also of distance, the far side of the range. The inset is the eight of clubs. In a line, the Mountain is said to block the cards beyond it: whatever lies on the other side is delayed or out of reach for now. Cards placed before it are read as what you bring to the climb.

How Falyora reads it

Starting a pair, the Mountain is the block, and the second card says what it concerns: Mountain then Fish is a financial obstacle, Mountain then Letter a reply that keeps not arriving. Ending a pair, it slows its neighbour: Ring then Mountain is a commitment that stalls.

Falyora reads the card as a description of terrain, not a verdict. It shows where the climb is. A Mountain beside the Key or the Sun usually describes a hard stretch with a way through in sight, which is a very different picture from a Mountain hemmed in by heavy cards.

Side by side

The Mountain & The Key

Mountain then Key is the answer to a long block, the moment something stuck finally gives. Key then Mountain is a solution that still asks for effort: you know the answer, but the path to it is steep.

The Mountain & The Crossroads

Mountain then Crossroads is an obstacle that forces a choice, a block that sends you looking for another way round. Crossroads then Mountain is a decision with a hard path ahead whichever road you take.

The Mountain & The Dog

Mountain then Dog is help in a hard stretch, a friend who stays for the whole climb. Dog then Mountain describes a friendship blocked by circumstances: distance, a misunderstanding, or simply too much going on.

The Mountain & The Sun

Mountain then Sun is an obstacle overcome, or effort that turns into success. Sun then Mountain is a good stretch that meets its test, confidence and energy asked to prove themselves.

Mountains do not move, but they are not endless either. The card shows the height of the climb, and every climb has another side, even when the cards beside it do not show it yet.
