The Key (33) in Lenormand: meaning and combinations

A large old-fashioned key, often ornate, sometimes hanging from a ribbon. The Key is the card of solutions and certainty: an answer, an opening, the thing that makes a stuck matter move. It also stands for importance, for what is key to a situation. It is a confident card. Where it appears, something is definite rather than merely hoped for.

In tradition

Traditionally the Key is read as success, solution and certainty. Older guides call it a card of opening: doors, opportunities, possibilities becoming real. Depending on its neighbours, it can also be read as security, or as something being locked away. The inset is the eight of diamonds. In a line, the Key is said to confirm the card beside it: whatever it touches is important or certain. Many readers look at the Key first in a large spread, because it shows where the matter turns.

How Falyora reads it

In the first position, the Key is the solution, and the second card shows what it opens or how: Key then House is a solution that concerns home, sometimes quite literally a new set of keys. In the second position, it makes its neighbour certain or important: Fish then Key is money as the deciding factor, Ring then Key a commitment you are sure of.

More than luck, the Key carries emphasis. It marks the card that matters most in a line, the one the rest of the reading turns on.
